Character Name: Garry
Canon: Ib

Background/History: Here and here - these aren't very detailed, though, so if it's necessary, I will write up a history section myself.
Personality:

Ib is a very short game in a very limited environment; a few hours spent with three characters in an art gallery makes up the entirety of the title. There is next to nothing known about Garry's backstory outside of the events that take place in the game. However, even in these conditions, he establishes himself as a three-dimensional character: a strange young man who, in spite of his eccentricities and failings, is caring, selfless, and loyal to the end.

He is first encountered passed out on the ground, near death; this somewhat sets the tone for his in-game activities. Despite being an adult man, he is not presented as being a protector of the nine-year-old protagonist or even more fit for the situation, nor does he present himself this way. While he does look out for her, she also looks out for him; he treats her largely as an equal rather than looking down on her for her age, and the two lean on each other equally for support. This immediately shows him to be pretty understanding. While he obviously does take her age into account and shows some special care, Garry judges people by their character, not by their features, age or otherwise.

It's also something that shows his willingness to attach himself to others and depend on them. For a while in the game, he mostly views Ib as a lifeline and his only chance back out to the real world, and accidentally ignores how she might be feeling due to his focus on his own escape. He clearly hates being alone when in a bad situation, and it might even be inferred that he gets into trouble when he's stressed without someone there to relax him; he almost got killed before meeting Ib, and she (potentially) stops him from panicking and doing rash things (smashing the mannequin head, for example) several times. Garry's clearly not a loner - he's a people person.

This is also one of his strengths. Garry quickly bonds with people and places his trust in them; he has an innocent optimism about him that's hard to resist, always believing that things will turn out for the best... somehow. He is a genuinely kind man who wants to help others, especially those who help him. And he is exceptionally caring and gentle; he treats Ib as if she were his own daughter, though he's known her for a few hours at best, and immediately accepts Mary into their crew, as well. Clearly, he wants to befriend and trust others, and willingly does so.

More than anything, though, Garry's loyalty tends to stand out. Once he's made friends with someone and feels that they consider him a friend, as well, he'll be there for them, no matter the circumstances. This is not to say Garry is a pushover; he stands his ground against Ib and sticks to his own opinions several times when things truly rub him the wrong way. But, more often than not, he listens, helps, and looks out for her. He offers support and praise both unconditionally and happily. At the end, he is even willing to lay down his life to save her. He's no martyr, but he's willing to sacrifice much to help those he cares for.

Garry is also very flighty. When good things happen, he pretty excited ("Not too shabbyyyy!") When scary things happen, he's also pretty quick to panic. His timidity is especially obvious next to the stoic Ib, who, while disturbed by the things around her, never quite has the screaming and flailing reactions that poor Garry does. In a somewhat amusing contrast to his gentle, patient nature, Garry is actually an energetic and nervous person, and easily scared when he's faced with things he's not comfortable with. He dislikes tense situations. Again, this is not to say that he's a complete wimp; he can perform under pressure and get things done when he has to, and when things get serious, he can get serious too. But you can bet that he'll be getting out of those situations as fast as he can and never looking back. It can make him seem almost childish at times.

And, while he has no actual backstory, a few things can be inferred about how he is from the game. He clearly has an interest in art; he was at the gallery alone, and mentions having been to many galleries in the past - so much that it's gotten a little boring from him! His unusual appearance is tied into this, as he mentions fashion quite a few times. It's safe to say that he has a taste for beauty, and his definition of artistic beauty and innovation is developed enough to be rather different from the norm, considering his dark appearance and the nature of Guertena's artwork. Additionally, he is not ashamed of those tastes in the least. On top of the aforementioned accepting nature, Garry's apparent lack of conformation to social norms (unusual clothes and hair and atypical gender presentation, at least in the Japanese version) suggest someone who's very open-minded.

Abilities/Powers: Garry's an absolutely normal guy! His advantages in the game consist of being able to read and to push large objects. You could take the latter as meaning he's strong, but considering the only point(s) of comparison is a nine-year-old girl and he appears to have a very thin build, that'd be a stretch.
Items/Weapons: He'll arrive with his old lighter (low on fuel) and Ib's handkerchief.
