[WAHHh GARRY!! he watches as Garry works instead of moving ahead on the pattern, and by the time the little shape is fully complete, he's looking very impressed indeed.]
Ah— You really have a knack for this sort of thing, don't you? That's good.
Well, that was the plan, [ he says, slightly sardonically. ] But no, this is just fine! It's a little overconfident to jump right into the difficult parts when you're learning something new. Though I'm flattered that you think so highly of my work...!
[he wants to say something like "you could probably do it", but if Garry feels comfortable sticking with this, he'll be more than happy to oblige.]
Let me know when you want to move on to something else, then. Anyway, you connect those patterns to each other like this— [and he will proceed to demonstrate that, too, tying one flower-looking pattern to the next with something that vaguely resembles a curling, thin vine. while doing so, he maaay just look like he wants to say something... or ask something, to be precise, because "that was the plan" says a lot.]
Hm... [ again, he takes a look at what Gilbert is doing and tries to copy it to the best of his ability... although he does notice the look on his face. ] ... Is something the matter?
[that has him looking up from his little kerchief design, brow briefly furrowing.]
Oh... I was just wondering, actually— [HOW TO WORD THIS. he wants to be polite in case the answer is something Garry can't give, because it seems like 80% of the population here does something Sketchy back home.] ...What is it that you do where you come from?
[ like Garry could possibly be involved in anything sketchy... He offers a little airy laugh at the question, answering as his fingers continue to work the needle. ]
Well... I'm trained as an artist, but I'm afraid I haven't had much success selling my work to anyone.
[Garry probably thinks the same of him, though!! or thought, maybe, at some point before he started waving his revolver around like a maniac...]
Oh... [NOW HE FEELS BAD.] Maybe you need a connection? There are a few artists I've heard of who became popular after friends among the nobility hosted their work.
[extraordinary.... thanks Garry, truly you are a pal.]
Ah, right... [it's still weird to imagine lands where nobility isn't really A Thing anymore. wow!! they're like raptors that went extinct or something, probably in a poof of lace and frills.] I wouldn't know how to go about getting one, either.
[ more like in a poof of growing middle class and industrial urbanization!! ]
Well, that's always the problem for people like me... Making it in the real world. But it's all right. I'm getting by - or, rather, I was getting by until I came here. I'll certainly have a few stories to tell when I get back...
Oh... That would make for some really dark pieces, wouldn't it? I'm not sure I want to get that scary.
[ he's slowly making his way with this little flower pattern along the bottom of his handkerchief, each successive shape looking a little sharper and more resolved than the last. It seems like he's a fast learner. ]
Just dark enough to be fascinating... That's about as far as I'll go.
[OH GARRY... he hadn't actually stopped to think of things as scary in that kind of conventional way, which sure says a lot about him. he's been scared before - afraid for the safety of others, but the situation itself had always seemed more dire than terrifying to him.
he purses his lips briefly, looking like he wants to say something - and then manages to derail himself like a champ after catching sight of the emerging pattern.]
Did you learn your other sewing techniques this quickly?
[no thanks garry you can keep... that..... all of it.]
Hm... [the only thing he's ever been that good at so quickly is cooking! closely followed by marksmanship... and even those took him a while to master! he briefly wonders why in the world garry struggles to sell his wares; his world is clearly lacking in sense, wow.] Next time, I'll pick something a little more difficult for you.
You could do it in the North if you wanted, I think. People keep a book up there to record the events that have happened so I know it's possible to write, anyway.
So I've heard, but, er, that's easier said than done, for me... I haven't got anything like Raven to protect me, and I'd feel bad making Diva take me there just because I'm bored and want to doodle. [ even though Diva has literally done the exact same thing to him before... ]
he also doesn't know how to tell Garry "actually I usually don't use Raven because he is huge and would probably collapse the tunnels".] I could take you the next time you want to go, if you want. Or you could come along - we go on trips to the North and East every fourteen days, or around there.
[it's going to be a missed opportunity he will forever regret!!]
It wouldn't be. There are people who want to go through to the other parts of the city for all kinds of reasons. It doesn't matter what, really. [as long as it isn't HARMFUL.]

Oh, uh, you think? Well, it's what I wanted to do as a career, so I've had plenty of practice sewing.

Are you sure this isn't too easy for you?

Mmm, it's always about connections! But I haven't got a one... And there's not really anything like nobility where I live, unfortunately.

[ and some therapy appointments to book BUT HEY ]

Maybe you could use it as inspiration? It's definitely a perspective that most people don't have.

no subject
Huh? Oh, er, no, no... I've got years of practice, that's all. Besides, I enjoy learning things like this.
[ especially in Haven, actually - it's a nice distraction from the misery of daily life. ]
no subject
Hm... Hmmm... If you want to challenge me, then I won't back down! Goodness knows I could use something to fill the time with.
no subject
If you wouldn't mind it, then. You might get bored, working on things like this for too long.
no subject
Well, boredom in Haven is pretty inevitable... Sewing is pretty much all I can think of to pass the time, since I can't draw or paint or anything.
no subject
You could do it in the North if you wanted, I think. People keep a book up there to record the events that have happened so I know it's possible to write, anyway.
